Description: Description of measurements/samples, purpose for which they were collected, and the platforms/instrumentation and methods in collectionThis sediment classification database contains classifications of the seabed collated from datacollected to date by INSSandINFOMAR. Data was also derived from EMODnet Geology, EMODnet Seabed Habitats and EUSeaMap projects.The existing sediment classifications have been translated to a scheme that is supported by EUNIS and MSFD Broad Benthic Habitat Type classification systems. This reclassification scheme includes five seabed substrate classes. Four substrate classes are defined on the basis of the modified Folk triangle (mud to sandy mud; sand; coarse sediment; and mixed sediment) and one additional substrate class (rock) was included.Sediment classification data is collected for the purpose ofdefining the physical, geological, chemical and biological properties of the seabed and is useful for marine habitat mapping.Multibeam echosounder data collection was performed usingthe following vessels: MV Cosantóir Bradán, RV Celtic Explorer, RV Celtic Voyager, RV Geo, RV Keary, RV Lir, RV Mallet, RV Tonn, SV Bligh, SV Siren.Statement on the level of data processed and quality control, limitations on reliabilitySee lineage statement for full data processing history.Arrangement of data Data has been organised and arranged into a Feature Class uploaded to ArcGIS system.Spatial and temporal resolution of data within the dataset Dataset is a vector polygonfile.
