Description: Minke whales were the most likely whale species to be seen in inshore waters around the Irish coast (Berrow et al. 2010). Sightings were recorded off all coasts with almost all sightings occurring in shallow waters (<200 m) over the Irish Shelf, though sightings were also recorded over shallower areas of the Porcupine and Rockall Banks (Wall et al. 2006). Relative abundances were typically low, reflecting the fact that most sightings involved single animals. In areas of active foraging, minke whales were sometimes seen in groups of two or three and loose feeding aggregations of up to seven animals were recorded in the Irish Sea. Hammond et al. (2011) estimated a total summer population of c30.000 – 40,000 minke whales for northwest European waters. © Irish Whale and Dolphin Group
